As time seems to be getting closer and closer to that all bloody day of pink, red, rose, candy and dates lets think of why that is.
Does anyone really know why the day was even invented let alone what it means? Well I decided to do a little research and was surprised at what it all meant.
According to the History Channel website, One of the legend says that Valentine was a priest serving during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudis II looked at soldiers in the army, he decided that single men were better than those with wives and families. He then proclaimed to outlaw marriage for young men. Valentine decided to go against the grain and performed marriages anyway. When the emperor found out, Valentine was ordered to be put to death. Other stories though portray Valentine as helping Christians escape hard Roman prisons. In these prisons they were often beaten and tortured.
One interesting story though is that Valentine sent the first greeting while in prison. While he was in prison he fell in love with whom say was the young jailer's daughter who visited him from time to time. Before he was put to death, Valentine wrote a letter and signed it 'From your Valentine' which is still used today. With all the murky stories though, people will happen to think that Valentine was one of the better and popular saints.
Well to me I really do not care too much but the card industry seems to have taken a great liking to it. According to the Hallmark Website http://newsroom.hallmark.com/Holiday/Valentines-Day there are approximately 152 million cards that are exchanged making it the second-largest holiday for giving greeting cards. Hallmark first offered these cards in 1913 and started producing in 1916.
Anyway with all these things going on and money being spent like none other it makes you wonder have we really lost the meaning of what it was for? Even though the past is murky I am sure the thought of just having someone even for a day just to say "Hey I enjoy your company, want to do something like everyone else" or do you say "Hey want to do something nontraditional?" Either way if you can find someone to hangout with that day to not feel the blues (perhaps also one of the saddest days as well) then just pop in an action movie or a chick flick and hangout with your friends. I am sure by the end of the day you will appreciate the company and the day.
I am sure somewhere out in the world there is someone for everyone...just make sure the person you decide to hangout with will never forget the day....
